Young Van Goghs paint a Christmas Car-D
Our Norwood Green branch threw down a challenge before Christmas to a group of creative youngsters to put their artistic talents to work transforming a car into a mobile Christmas card.
Pupils from the Clifton School in Southall chose a silver Vauxhall Astra as their blank canvas, which they got to work on straight away drawing pictures of Santas, snowmen, reindeer, Christmas trees, angels, holly and ivy – in fact anything depicting a Christmas theme. The car is currently on show in our showroom at Norwood Green, where it will remain until after Christmas.
Sales Manager Jason McKay commented: “It was an exciting and fun-filled day for the children and teachers of the Clifton School. We enjoyed watching the youngsters decorating the car very much and are sure it will attract lots of attention from visitors to the showroom.”
Shania keeps it in the family
Christmas was on the cards for a school in Southall this week as the winners of a competition to create a Christmas card design for our Norwood Green branch were announced by the Mayor of Ealing, Cllr Mrs Hazel Ware.
Three outstanding festive designs with a motoring theme were picked from among scores of entries submitted by pupils from Three Bridges Primary School in Norwood Green, Southall. All the children’s designs are on display in our showroom at Poplar Avenue and the school prize of £100 was carried off by the school for the overall best design, entered by 8 year-old Shania. Talent clearly runs in the family as her sister Anita was runner-up in our Design a Christmas Card competition in 2005.
The cheque was presented to head teacher Matthew Burdett from Three Bridges School and Shania and the children who produced the other winning designs each received vouchers for £50, £15 and £10 from the Mayor.
The winners for Three Bridges Primary School are: -
· 1st Prize - Shania age 8 years
· 2nd Prize - Tiffany age 10 years
· 3rd Prize Rajveer age 10 years
Children, parents and teacher from Three Bridges school were invited to vote for their favourite design in the weeks leading up to the prize-giving. Jason McKay, sales manager of Monorep, who presented the school prizes, commented: “The public’s response to this year’s Design a Christmas Card competition has been truly outstanding and we would like to thank all those who took the time to vote for the children’s card designs.”
Cllr Mrs Hazel Ware who was a the ceremony, added: “We were very impressed by the high number and the creative standard of all the Christmas card designs produced. It’s always good to see local businesses like Monorep showing a sense of social responsibility and putting something back into our community by working with our schools in educational projects like this. The judging was not an easy task, but it was fun.”

Monorep fuels Heathland School’s Eco drive
A leading local car retailer has thrown its weight behind a drive to design the world’s most fuel-efficient car by Hounslow-based Heathland School. Monorep of Hayes this week confirmed it will sponsor the school’s entry in the 2008 Shell Eco Marathon, which will see it go head-to-head with some of the most fuel efficient and technically advanced vehicles in the world. The Eco Marathon, which is in its 30th year, is an international competition and the Heathland School was selected to compete in the British round, which will take place at the Rockingham Motor Speedway in Northamptonshire next July.
Harvey Nicholls, Shell Eco Marathon project leader and head of Heathland School’s Resistant Materials department, has a personal interest in Motorsport and engineering having been a Government advisor on Motorsport in the UK. He explained how the school became involved in the project: “We originally entered the Eco Marathon as part of the Schools Initiative and around 20 of our students are taking part in as a way of honing their engineering and technical skills. We’ve done similar challenges in the past, so this project came together relatively easily. From our perspective, it gives our students a worthwhile engineering project to get ‘hands on’ with and the environmental issue interested us too. They’re really enjoying this task and some of them would probably work all night on it, if I let them!”
“The challenge of getting a vehicle we have made to go as far as possible on a teaspoonful of fuel was irresistible and looking at the competition, some of whom are obtaining 10,000 miles per gallon plus from their vehicles, you can see it’s going to be quite a challenge! Especially as there are literally hundreds of vehicles entered in the various different categories from around the world.” added Harvey.
David McKay, managing director of Monorep, commented: “We would love to see the Heathland School win against the best schools and colleges in the world. I believe they can do it. Let a Middlesex school take it home!”
